My girlies

Can you really have to many pictures of your kids? I don’t think so:) We took these a couple weeks ago up in Park City. It is getting so cold!
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Now back to work!

These are the kind of pictures I always try to get of my kids and never succeed. How do you get your girls to pose so nicely?
Please please please let me know if you’ll ever be coming to NYC!

Love the vibrant colors in these shots. I was wondering if you use any color enhancing actions? I use Red Leaf actions, but can’t seem to get the natural looking vibrancy with them.

 ( Nov 27th, 2010 7:55 am)
Amanda Richards

Katie! I loved the video you posted with the baby resting on her hands. Could you tell me how your set up is? Do you use a boppy under her? And how do you position her legs and feet. I almost pulled if off the other day but we had to cheat and have mom hold his arms. :-) Thanks! Love everything you do!

Always beautiful… love your style. I have a question, which I’m sure has been asked, your little fabric floral stools… is it ok to ask, where might one find one of those?

I have to say- nice to read of folks making time for famiy; the children grow up too fast and family time is super important! Enjoy!!!

so sad

There are no words that can describe what this family has gone through this past year. Poor little Rex was diagnosed with a brain tumor this last year. Around the same time his mom found out she was pregnant with little Anna. Their biggest hope is that he would make it to see her. I feel so blessed to be able have created these memories for this family. I have grown to love them.
Rex passed away today. Here is a link to his blog if you would like to donate to his family.

We took these pictures about a week ago. The Dr. told them that Rex only had 24-48 hrs to live and that was a couple weeks before his little sister arrived. I’m so glad he held on long enough to meet her. He loved her so much! He was so weak in these pictures, he couldn’t sit up on his own and was really sleepy, so we didn’t get a ton of shots, but he was such a great little trooper.

I will post more of little Anna later, but here is one.

Tears welling up over this post… what a precious gift you gave to this family, as they will treasure the beautiful photos of their sweet little son their entire lives. Blessings to you.

Angela Tritle

I stumbled across your work on youtube, actually. (On how to pose a baby with their chin in their hands….which was fantastic, btw)

And just read this story….oh my!! I’m no crier, but this had me in tears. What a beautiful, priceless moment to capture photos of this sweet family together for just a little longer.
The picture of the brother and sisters hands together puts a lump in my throat, it’s just beautiful!
A price tag couldn’t be put on a session like this. Simply beautiful. <3
I will be praying for this precious family!!

 ( Feb 1st, 2011 6:54 pm)

Somehow I overlooked the posts around this time. I am utterly teary and heartbroken! I looked at the photos more intimately and saw the little angel in Rex as he looked at his sister with love, especially in his white suit! I truly believe that little Anna has been appointed a special guardian angel for the rest of her days. And to mom and dad, I pray for you from the bottom of my heart. I hope you find the strength and peace to keep Rex alive…through stories, videos and photos (thanks to peekaboo). May God bless you now and forever.

 ( Dec 30th, 2010 3:49 am)

I had to comment!! I can’t even imagine what that family is going through….I’m sure they will hold on to these pictures for the rest of their lives!! Your work is amazing…I found you through Snazzie Drawers.

As a mother to my own 3 year old (who is only 2 months younger than Rex), I cannot even imagine the heartache. I literally was bawling and sobbing through these pictures as well as following their story. My heart goes out to his family. This makes me want to squeeze my own son a little tighter tonight. I’m so glad they were able to get some beautiful pictures with their family before his sweet spirit was welcomed back to heaven.

I love all the photos but especially the one where they are all together and they are watching little Anna sleeping. To me, this photo is saying that little Anna can now take her nap because she was just in her big brother’s arms who made it all okay and for her not to worry.

 ( Nov 20th, 2010 5:18 pm)

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I love your beautiful touching pictures. What a blessing you have to be able to spend time and get to know your sweet blessing. I know you love them and are probably beside yourself. As for the pictures, they are priceless. I can’t get over the one that Anna is looking at Rex. I am not sure if his eyes are closed or if he is looking at her, but either way it is amazingly perfect. Both so close to the other side. You gave them little pieces of their heart in perfect pictures for the last time and you did such a beautiful job.

Joy Stallard

Heart is broken for this family. Can’t get them off my mind. I just can’t imagine how difficult this journey will be for them with their new life without their sweet Rex. Prayed so much for them this week and hope they are blessed with wonderful friends who overfill their lives with love right now.

 ( Nov 18th, 2010 1:57 pm)

What a story of great sadness but also tremendous inspiration. Most any of our issues seem pitifully tiny in comparison to what has gone on with this child and family.
How can a little boy fight such a fight so young, or understand that pain and suffering? And for the parents to watch their child go through it and not be able to take it away.
You are all heros, plain and simple. To have one child leave you as another miracle of life enters your life….two extremes at the same time. The best and worst for any parent.
Anna will know her brother forever because of these photos, done so beautifully. They will always mean so much…the brother she barely met and never knew…but you can almost feel them touching just in the photos. She will have those moments with him all her life now.
Truly, our prayers and love do go out to all of you. And especially brave little Rex, whose pain and weariness are over. We pray his parents can remember his strong soul and brightness, and it will help ease their sorrow in the months and yeas to come. Even though you may know us, hundreds if not thousands–stand still when we heard and saw your story. Thanks to all of you for sharing such a sacred moment.

Oh Katie, what a wonderful treasure you created for this family. I have been watching Rex’s website for quite some time. Our hearts ache for Rex’s parents, grandparents and extended family, but he is now surrounded by glory and perfect beings. The picture where Rex and Anna are laying together, his eyes are closed and her’s are open, looks like she is communicating with the man upstairs and preparing Rex at the same time! Priceless

 ( Nov 17th, 2010 7:06 pm)

That made me cry. So heartbreaking.

 ( Nov 17th, 2010 6:42 pm)

Amazing pictures and amazing little boy to hang in there to meet his sister. Finn, Nora & family

So Ian emailed me a few months ago saying he wanted to surprise his wife for her birthday, by flying their family out from Florida for some family pictures! Is that not the cutest surprise EVER? He gave her a map to Utah to open on her birthday and that is how he told her. Talk about a little pressure. And of course the day they came in, was sooooooooo freaking cold and dark outside we didn’t get to shoot long outside. Luckily little Nora was so awesome and smiled for the whole session! These guys were so much fun to shoot and glad their little kiddo’s got to see snow for the first time:) Enjoy!

Beautiful family, beautiful work!

 ( Nov 23rd, 2010 2:55 am)

Wow – look at the eyes on those beautiful babies!

 ( Nov 22nd, 2010 5:55 pm)

These shots are fantastic. The parents sure have great fashion sense for their kids. Their kids must be amazingly well-behaved, for the son to wear a blazer without complaint and for the lil one to wear a headband and not try to take it off. Great family to work with, I bet! :)

 ( Nov 19th, 2010 12:13 am)

Gorgeous work as always…love them all!!! Where did you find the backdrop used for the family photo? Denny? Which one? I have been having such a hard time finding a neutral backdrop in browns that I “love” and I love this one but can’t seem to find it. Help!

 ( Nov 18th, 2010 2:21 pm)
Tracy Murphy Eder

WOW, the pictures couldn’t be any more Beautiful!! You’re right Amanda, the one of Finn & Nora together is absolutely precious!
Love them all. So glad you guys gad a great time in Utah and the kids got to see snow. Way to plan a special trip Ian!

 ( Nov 17th, 2010 5:45 am)

SO BEAUTIFUL!! Each and every shot is just amazing. Such beautiful kids! Wow!

 ( Nov 17th, 2010 1:53 am)
Ian - Amanda's Husband

Well, I guess I get credit for planning the trip but Katie and Dan get all the credit for making it a success. Great job you two! It was truly worth it!!!

 ( Nov 16th, 2010 9:58 pm)
Lindsay Banner

Why I am getting all emotional looking at these pictures!! I LOVE these!! What a GREAT husband Ian is!! Amanda and Ian are what make Banner Boutique so fun!! Thanks for doing such an AMAZING job on their pictures!! You guys ROCK!!!

 ( Nov 16th, 2010 8:54 pm)

Thank you so much, Katie and Dan. I just love these and I can’t say how grateful we are. That picture of my two sweet babies together is priceless! It was an amazing experience and you two are phenomenal. Nora was a terror on the flights home, but it was all worth it. I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

 ( Nov 16th, 2010 3:31 pm)
Judy Perez - Amanda's mom

OK… I have to admit that when the kids told us they were going to Utah for a photo shoot, I couldn’t help but wonder (and hold my tongue), “Utah? What’s wrong with the photographers we have in Florida? Why go all the way to Utah for…photos???”

BUT, after seeing these, I can understand what Amanda was talking about. They are amazing, as are all the ones below them.

They had a great time on their little “photo vacation”. Finn got to see snow for the 1st time. Ian was sweet to plan all this out. What a great son-in-law! What a sweet family! What a proud Nani.

 ( Nov 16th, 2010 2:25 pm)
Jennifer O. (aka Romeo and Mae)

How sweet is that guy?! What a gorgeous family!

 ( Nov 16th, 2010 12:46 pm)

What a guy to do this for his wife…and family! So many shots are great, but the one with Mom and daughter second row from bottom is beautiful and touching! Almost brought tears to my eyes….something so innocent and pure about it. Hope you enjoyed your trip, and amazing photos as usual. I am one of the many who look forward to each new posting and it’s usually one of the highlights of my day when I see something new! What a gift

New Video Tutorial

This is how I do the “Hands Under The Chin” pose. I’m sure there are other ways, but I thought I would share my “technique”.
A special thanks to Dave and Alisha for letting me use their sweet little baby and for my awesome brother for making the video.
He filmed a lot of this newborn session so I will post more poses later:)

Melissa Gilmore

I just loved your video so much, and it taught me so much. I’m not sure why you pulled it down but, I’d love to share it with a fellow photographer on how to pose newborns. Is there anyway you’d post it again?

Whoa! You did that so fast! What a cute video! Thank you for sharing this Kate! I noticed you jiggled her head a little bit. I was just watching a new mom at a baby shower the other night and she was jiggling her baby on her lap and I was thinking how that motion makes me sleepy too. I fall asleep while rocking my baby to sleep every night. Never thought to use it for this pose! Great idea!

 ( Nov 7th, 2010 7:39 am)

That is the cutest video ever! What a little doll to sleep through it all, gotta love that!

Daxton & Bronx

This was such a fun shoot, the boys were adorable and of course Dad was STARVING so we ordered sushi during this 3 hr newborn shoot.
I’m going to have to make this a tradition on these newborn shoots, everyone is much happier with a little food:)

I just had my brother film a newborn shoot I did a couple weeks ago and will be posting parts to my blog soon. I have been getting a lot of emails on how to do this shot and it is hard to explain through email so I figured a video will be easier. I will try to get it posted this next week.

Hi, love love your work. do you use digital backgrounds or fabric backdrops for your indoor shots. i love everything you do! T.I.A.

 ( Nov 30th, 2010 10:46 pm)

hmmm maybe h&m can’t remember for sure where i got it.

 ( Nov 9th, 2010 5:06 am)

 ( Nov 8th, 2010 3:19 am)

Your images are “to die for”! Gorgeous!
Do you mind sharing the link to where you got the 1st little boys hat (pageboy) in this post? It’s gorgeous and I’m always looking for boys hats. Thank you so much!

 ( Nov 8th, 2010 1:15 am)

Hey Ela,
Yes we have a platform that we shoot on. My husband made frames out of wood that we stapled the fabric too. We set the frames behind the platform. I will make a video to show what I’m talking about:)

 ( Nov 7th, 2010 5:32 pm)

Hey :)
Just got a couple faux backdrops from pepperlu and LOVE them- (thanks to your advertising :) but I can’t figure out a good way to hang them… Nervous about ripping the material. Also- how do you get the bottom to be straight w the floor? is your flooring elevated and your backdrop is hanging behind it??? It looks so great! Sorry for asking you tons of questions…

 ( Nov 7th, 2010 8:47 am)

Nice! Can’t wait to see the videos! I’m dying over the boy’s hat! Love it!
